SUSANNAH (DAISY) MAKEIG-JONES (1881-1945) Daisy Makeig-Jones joined the Wedgwood factory as a ceramic designer in 1909. She persuaded the Wedgwood factory’s skilled team of industrial chemists to experiment with decorative techniques to produce the “Ordinary Lustres” from which were developed the first Fairyland Lustre designs. By combining this technical ingenuity with a vivid imagination that drew upon the work of artists such as Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac and Kay Nielsen, Daisy Makeig-Jones created an exotic and dramatic vision of Fairyland on Wedgwood bowls and vases. Description / Expertise
Daisy Makeig-Jones for Wedgwood
'Butterfly Women', a rare Fairyland Lustre Vase and Cover, decorated with four large Fairies perched on branches, set against a deep blue ground, the cover with a smaller fairy sat on a branch.
The 'Butterfly Women' design is recorded as being released on Trumpet shaped vases and a Listal bowl but not, however, on this shape vase and cover. It is also interesting to note that the vase has no 'Z' number. Una des Fontaine comments that the women used on various vessels differ in design slightly.
